The Power of Ten – An Introduction

October 24th, 2008

Math can be daunting to many students and to some teachers as well. Many math concepts seem to confuse younger children, and a substantial number of adults grow up feeling less than confident about their mathematic skills. The way that numbers and mathematic operations are taught in North America is really quite different than in other parts of the world. In Asia, students are taught division first and then subtracting, as ‘sharing’ items with others is a logical way to begin. (4 cookies shared between 2 students is really 4 ÷ 2.) In some languages, the names of numbers also make more sense. For instance, in Chinese, 13 is said 10 + 3, which is really beneficial when it comes to learning addition. If you think about it, the way the numbers from 10-19 are named in English is quite confusing.

30 Tips for teaching Elementary Math

February 21st, 2008
  1. Small dry erase boards (or white boards from your local home supply store cut into squares) and dry erase markers are great tools when teaching math. You write a problem out on the board and have all of your students copy it down and work it out. The first one that lifts their board in the air with the correct answer wins a treat. (Tip: Maybe set a time limit for each problem)

  2. You can create a game show in your classroom with touch light’s (those lights you push on and they turn on) and math problems. Divide your class into two teams (boys versus girls if you can) and each student gets a light. You give out math problems and the student or team that completes the problem first hits their light and their team gets a point (if the problem is right). Offer some type of prize to the winning team.
