American elementary school students have improved their math skills considerably, with 20% more fourth graders scoring “proficient” on standardized math tests than in 1990, according to the National Assessment of Educational Progress. Reading skills show more modest gains. The number of students scoring proficient in reading has increased only 4% since 1992

Playing four 15-minute sessions of board games such as snakes and ladders can improve a child’s mathematical abilities significantly, according to a study of four and five-year-olds. And the improvement in numerical tests is still measurable nine weeks later.

The researchers who conducted the study said nursery classes should include numerical board games to familiarise children with numbers before they go to school. It is also an easy way for parents to give their children a head start in maths. (more…)

Sorting according to rules is a mathematical concept that should be taught during the Early Years at school. We use sorting our entire lives but it is not a skill that children know innately and so it must be taught.
